Baptism for Infants and Children Below the Age of Reason1

“In presenting their own children for baptism, parents profess their faith in the promise of eternal life.(From “Called to Faith”-the diocesan handbook on the sacraments of initiation.)

1.                 Couple requesting baptism for their child must meet with the pastor to determine readiness to raise their child in the Faith. See “Called to Faith” Section 2 paragraph #50.

2.                 If the pastor determines that the couple is ready, a date is set.

3.                 Parents receive the video “ Your Child’s Baptism” along with a booklet. They take this video home, view it and read the booklet.2

4.                 Couple attends a class on Baptism at the parish. (To be scheduled by the couple and leader of the class.)

5.                 Couple meets with the priest or deacon who will celebrate the sacrament in order to review the liturgical rite.

6.                 Couple meets with a “companion family.” This meeting may be informal and is to promote a more relaxed atmosphere in which the new couple can explore the meaning of baptism and life in Christ.

7.                 The couple selects sponsors/godparents for their child. (See “Called to Faith”  Section 2, paragraphs 51-52 on the responsibility of godparents.)

Following baptism, the parish makes every effort to welcome parents to grow in their faith through liturgy and sacrament, by adult education, from prayer opportunities and service to others. Parents are encouraged to begin or to continue participating in these parish offerings. Their child is integrated into parish life by their example. When their child is of catechetical age, the parents who are the primary educators of their child, may also consider supplementing their catechesis by enrolling their child in the parish’s religious education program.

1Currently in the diocese of Richmond the age of reason is considered to be 7 years old. “The terms "age of reason" and "catechetical age" are generally synonymous terms for 7 years of age[from “Called to Faith”]
