Just what does Catholic mean?

Catholic means universal. Jesus founded One Church, his Bride. As one wise priest said: "Jesus has one Bride, not a harem!"

All those baptized "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" belong to Christ and his Church. Over the centuries some brothers and sisters have broken fellowship with the "Mother" Church- that is, the Catholic Church, and formed gatherings whose members, although they are not in full communion with the Mother Church, are still Christians- brothers and sisters in Christ. We invite our brothers and sisters in these gatherings to "come and see."

What exactly is a sacrament?

When you see a book labeled "The Holy Bible" you know it contains nourishment for your soul. You must pick it up, read it, meditate on it. The Bible is a sign of what God can do for your soul.

A sacrament is a little bit like that.  Sacraments are outward signs of an inward working of God's grace. They have the power to do exactly what God intends them to do. I can see you pick up a bible and read it, but I cannot see the good it may do for your soul. We can see the outward signs of sacraments- water, oil, bread, wine, but we cannot see the action that God takes upon the person's soul.

This analogy is not perfect and there are many more important aspects to the sacraments. Perhaps the most important is that the Bible can inspire you, but it cannot impart to you the grace to do what it says. A sacrament does just that! It actually gives you the grace to love, forgive and walk the way of Christ!

Like picking up and reading the Bible in order to receive its benefits, a Catholic must cooperate with the sacraments for them to bring an effective work of grace in their souls. The grace from the sacrament is in your souls waiting to assist you in every way to salvation.

Does the Catholic Church believe in the Bible?

Absolutely!!! Who do you think gave the world the Christian Bible? Scriptures are our very foundation.

Some Christian groups claim to believe in only the Bible. They maintain that the Bible speaks for itself. If this were true then why are there so many denominations all claiming that their interpretation is correct? This is why... A person has to interpret whatever he reads. When a person or a group interprets what is written, then the person/group automatically imposes a particular meaning on the text.

The Catholic Church believes that when Christ established his Church that he made the promise never to leave or forsake her. The Risen Lord made sure there was a way for believers to know that they were receiving authentic Faith. Jesus passed this authority on to his Apostles- the Twelve- and they to their successors with the guarantee that the Holy Spirit would never let them fail to pass on the Truth in its fullness and holiness.

How is the Catholic Church different than denominational gatherings of Christians?

For many Christian groups the sermon is the focus of Sunday gatherings. It is based on the Bible. It is in the sermon that Jesus speaks to the gathered faithful. The Catholic Church recognizes this as important but that there is another level by which Christ communicates Himself to his people. This is through the Sacraments.

When Catholics gather on Sundays they also come to hear the Word (Scripture) proclaimed and to hear the pastor teach. Primarily they come to feed their souls in a very powerful and intimate way- in the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

Before his death the last thing Jesus did was to give Himself to his disciples as bread and wine. He then gave Himself entirely to us on the cross. Every Mass is a re-presentation (not a re-enactment or a re-crucifying!) of this sacrifice on the cross. When Catholics receive communion they receive Jesus entirely into themselves: The Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of the Risen Lord.

Does the Church worship Jesus?

Of course we do! We worship the Trinitarian God: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Three Persons, One God. Co-Equal and of One Substance.....

Or Mary?
We do not worship Mary. We honor her above all other people as having a privileged place in salvation. She was chosen to be the Mother of Jesus who is God!

Would God have chosen any one who was imperfect, sinful or polluted in any way to conceive His Son by the Holy Spirit? That means Jesus carries the DNA of his Mother!

Would God have settled for an ordinary sinful woman- no matter how good a Jewess she tried to be- to bear Jesus within her womb of flesh for nine months, nurse Him, raise Him, teach Him by word and example? Think about it.

St Francis has begun year round classes for entering the Catholic Church. So do not wait! Join us in Assisi Hall at 10AM Sundays.
